Romanian general election, 1990

General elections were held in Romania on 20 May 1990.〔Nohlen, D & Stöver, P (2010) ''Elections in Europe: A data handbook'', p1591 ISBN 978-3-8329-5609-7〕 They were the first elections held after the overthrow of the Communist regime six months earlier, and also the first public presidential elections.〔 They were also the first free elections held in the country since 1937.〔Reaves, Joseph A. (Romanians Hope Free Elections Mark Revolution's Next Stage ). Chicago Tribune, 1990-03-30.〕
Ion Iliescu was elected President, whilst the National Salvation Front won 263 of the 395 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 91 of the 118 seats in the Senate.
